The Outreach Honor Band is open to advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion students in 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades from the extended Tucson metropolitan area. This group is not intended for beginning players, as the music is quite challenging. All members must currently be enrolled in their school band program to participate unless the school does not have a band program.
Information packets are sent to all Tucson area public and private Junior High, Middle School and High School band directors and to select private music teachers in the area. Any student interested in joining the group must submit an online registration. All students must also play a placement audition prior to the first rehearsal. Selection for membership is based upon playing ability and instrumentation needs. All returning members will be guaranteed a place in the band, but all members have to re-audition each semester.
Students are expected to be present and on-time at all rehearsals. Exceptions are for illness, family obligation, or school music activity. If a student is absent more than two rehearsals, he/she will forfeit his/her membership in the organization and forfeit the opportunity to perform in the concert at the end of the semester.
In the spring, information packets are sent again to area band directors and private music teachers. Members of the fall semester must reregister online, but they will be guaranteed a spot in the organization. New students may be considered for membership in the Outreach Honor Band in the spring by submitting an application form and playing a placement audition. Again, selection for membership will be based upon playing ability and instrumentation needs.
